Why can I see sleep duration but no sleep stages?

Check whether stage details are missing at the source or simply absent from Strata's sleep view, and keep sleep scores separate from recorded stages.

Product-informed mockup with fictional October 6 records. It contrasts fields available in the source and Strata's current detail view. No stage values or health outcomes are invented.

Sleep duration can be available without a visible stage breakdown. First check the same night in Apple Health, then check which fields Strata actually shows. Strata's current sleep screens display duration and score information rather than a REM, Core and Deep timeline. A score alone does not confirm that stage observations are available.

Where should I check the original sleep stages?

Begin in Apple Health rather than using a number in Strata to infer what the watch recorded. Apple's current instructions place sleep history under Browse, then Sleep, on iPhone. Choose the night you are reviewing, then use Show More Sleep Data to inspect the available categories.

Apple distinguishes Stages, which shows time and percentages for Awake, REM, Core and Deep, from Amounts, which includes Time Asleep and the Sleep Goal. A duration total and a stage breakdown answer different questions. Record which view you inspected before comparing apps.

If the original chart has no data, Apple's setup guidance says sleep tracking must be enabled and the watch worn for at least an hour. It also notes that a depleted watch battery prevents tracking. These are source checks, not a guarantee that changing a setting will recover a past night.

What does Strata show for an individual night?

On the web, open Sleep and use the date control to select the day you want to inspect. The selected day's duration and available score fields sit above the history summaries. Keep the selected date separate from the 30-day charts below it.

On iPhone, the Sleep tab has a Sleep Log. Tap a dated entry to open Sleep Detail, which shows the recorded duration, an available overall score and quality label, score breakdown rings, and notes when present. The current web Sleep page and mobile Sleep Detail screen do not render a sleep-stage timeline.

When Apple Health has stage details but the Strata screen has only hours, that screen difference does not establish a failed source recording. Use the original stage view for the breakdown and Strata for the fields it currently displays. Repeating sync is not a way to add a chart the screen does not implement.

Does a sleep score prove that stages were imported?

No. Strata's HealthKit sync can calculate an overall score from a duration record even when stage-specific samples are unavailable. That path uses a fallback in its calculation; the resulting score is not evidence that Deep or REM time was measured for that night.

The same sync path writes the daily duration, score and quality summary. Its local sample parsing and the fields shown on a page are separate steps. Do not describe a visible summary as a complete copy of the original sleep record.

The Duration, Bedtime and Interruptions rings are score components, not durations for sleep stages. An overall score also should not be assumed to match Apple's score merely because both use a scale out of 100. This guide does not treat either score as a diagnosis or a clinical sleep assessment.

What should I record before asking about a mismatch?

Write a short comparison that someone else can follow. Keep observed values separate from conclusions about their cause. If duration itself is missing or different, follow the Apple Health data troubleshooting guide linked below; that is a different question from a missing stage chart.

  1. Name the night or date in each app and check that the comparison refers to the same record.
  2. State whether Apple Health shows Time Asleep, stage details, both, or neither for that night.
  3. Name the Strata screen: web Sleep or iPhone Sleep Detail. List the fields it displays rather than calling the entire record missing.
  4. Note whether your question concerns duration, stage details, or a score. Avoid substituting one measure for another.

An illustrative example

What does a useful comparison look like?

In this fictional example, Alex sees 7.5 hours and a stage breakdown in Apple Health for October 6. Strata's dated Sleep Detail entry shows 7.5 hours and an overall score, with no stage timeline. Alex describes the issue as a view limitation for stage details, not as a missing night. These constructed records illustrate the comparison and make no claim about sleep quality.

What other questions come up?

Should Awake time be called Deep sleep?

No. Apple presents Awake and the named sleep stages as separate labels. Preserve the source labels when describing a chart instead of combining categories to fill a missing value.

Can a weekly average tell me a night's stage percentages?

No. A weekly duration average summarizes hours across records. It does not supply the stage breakdown for any individual night. Open the original nightly details for that question.

Can I calculate REM time from the overall score?

The displayed score is not a reversible stage record. Do not turn it into invented minutes or percentages. Keep unobserved stage values unknown rather than replacing them with a calculated guess.

Will changing a sleep goal restore an old stage chart?

A goal is a setting, not a measurement from a past night. Check whether an original record exists before expecting a goal change to supply missing observations.

Keep this in mind

A clear mismatch report identifies the original view, the Strata screen and the exact field in question. That gives the next check a concrete starting point.
